Sandy Ricks (Elijah Wood) é mandado pela mãe a passar suas férias de verão em uma ilha perto da Flórida, mas a idéia não o agrada muito. Nem mesmo a companhia do tio, Porter(Paul Hogan), o faz apreciar suas férias. Mas, uma nova amizade fará com que Sandy consiga apreciar melhor a viagem. E é uma amizade bem inusitada: um golfinho chamado Flipper, que, além de tudo, faz com que o menino se aproxime mais do tio e o acompanha em diversas aventuras.
