Interior do Rio Grande do Sul, por volta de 1827. Numa estância de propriedade de um avarento que vive com a enteada, todos os escravos devotam-lhe ódio, à exceção de um negrinho que, em sua ingenuidade, não percebe a maldade do senhor. Chega à região, acompanhado de um negro livre, um gaúcho incumbido de domar potros. A moça se apaixona pelo forasteiro e o negro desperta nos escravos anseios de liberdade. O negrinho perde dois potros no pastoreio e é açoitado até a morte. Vingando-se, castelhanos atacam a fazenda. Os dois forasteiros e a moça aproveitam-se da confusão para abandonar a região.
