Um criminoso encantador mas implacável, Gore Hepburn, mantém a família de um refém, gerente do banco, Harry Fordyce, como parte de um plano a sangue frio para roubar 97.000 libras. O bandido afável e cruel sequestra a esposa e o filho do gerente de banco e depois disfarça-se como um detetive de uma companhia de seguros, enquanto está planejando roubar a instituição neste crime. Infelizmente, alguns dos funcionários do gerente aprendem sobre a trama e o gerente aterrorizado deve pedir-lhes para permanecer em silêncio.
