Carmen, uma mulher pobre e bonita, vive em uma favela no Rio de Janeiro. Todos os homens a desejam, inclusive seu padrasto, mas ela só tem olhos para o namorado dela, Milton. Depois de ser expulso de casa, ela descobre que seu amante é casado. Infeliz com sua vida, ela encontra um lugar em uma pensão e tenta encontrar um emprego, sem sucesso. Cansada e morrendo de fome, ela acaba ficando na rua, sendo ajudada por um transeunte, que a deixa na casa do escritor Flávio Martins, um homem dividido entre a proposta de um casamento arrumado, uma chama antiga e a nova convidada.
