Em meio a uma tempestade marítima, os tripulantes de um barco não conseguem controlar o vento e o mar. Enquanto isso, dois dragões saem das nuvens escuras devorando um ao outro. Estes estranhos incidentes levam o mago Ged a investigar o que estaria afetando o equilíbrio das coisas. Em sua jornada, ele encontra o príncipe Arren, que se diz perseguido por uma sombra. Os dois seguem viagem juntos. Por onde passam, encontram sinais de que algo vai mal no mundo.
