História livremente baseada na vida de Doris Duke (1912-1993), milionária herdeira de uma indústria de tabaco, e seu tímido mordomo Bernard Lafferty. A gélida porém jovial Doris demite seu mordomo por ele ter servido uma fatia de melão ruim. A agência de mordomos então envia a ela Lafferty, rapaz experiente no ofício que já havia trabalhado com Elizabeth Taylor e Peggy Lee. Alcoólotra, ele acabou de sair da reabilitação. Ainda assim Doris fica com ele, transformando-o em seu alter ego gay. Mas o tempo faz com que o relacionamento entre eles se torne paixão.
