Em 2016, dez anos após os acontecimentos dos filmes anteriores, a sociedade sofre com o ciberterrorismo. O Death Note é um caderno sobrenatural que concede ao seu usuário o poder de matar simplesmente escrevendo o nome de uma pessoa em suas páginas. Seis Death Notes diferentes caem para o mundo humano, sendo essa quantidade o número máximo de cadernos que podem existir ao mesmo tempo. Em meio a isso, dois novos indivíduos, herdeiros do DNA de Light Yagami e de L, começam um jogo mortal de gato e rato mais uma vez.
