Sir William Rutland (Cary Grant), um rico industrial inglês, chega a Tóquio a negócios durante os Jogos Olímpicos de Verão de 1964. Procura em vão por um quarto e acaba como hóspede indesejado de uma garota inglesa, Christine Easton (Samantha Eggar). No dia seguinte, Sir William conhece um jovem atleta americano, Steve Davis (Jim Hutton), a quem, sem consultar a senhoria, subloca metade de sua parte na casa. Nos dias seguintes, sob o olhar satisfeito de Sir William, e também como resultado de algumas de suas manobras, Steve e Christine se apaixonam, embora a garota já esteja noiva de Julius Haversack (John Standing), um excêntrico idealista ligado à embaixada inglesa. Rutland continua suas manobras destemido e consegue fazer com que um casamento "formal" entre Steve e Christine pareça indispensável para evitar fofocas na imprensa. Steve e a garota aceitam, mas o casamento, novamente devido às manobras inteligentes de Sir William, será tudo menos formal.
