É 6 de janeiro de 1904 e Dublin celebra o Dia dos Reis em meio à neve. Na casa das irmãs Morgan, Julia (Cathleen Delany) e Kate (Helena Carroll), é oferecida uma ceia a amigos e parentes, logo após a realização de um sarau musical e poético. Já perto do final da celebração, quando boa parte dos convidados já tinham saído, o barítono Bartell D'Arcy (Frank Patterson) começa a cantar uma música triste, que faz com que Gretta Conroy (Anjelica Huston) se lembre de uma paixão antiga, que já faleceu. Surpreso com a mudança de comportamento de sua esposa, Gabriel (Donal McCann) conhece a história da antiga paixão dela ao chegarem no hotel em que estão hospedados.
