Kate (Meg Ryan) e Charlie (Timothy Hutton) têm uma vida perfeita planejada: comprar uma casa, casar, ter filhos, o pacote todo. O medo de voar de Kate a mantém no Canadá enquanto Charlie vai a Paris para uma convenção médica. Lá, Charlie se encanta pela adorável Juliette e decide cancelar o casamento com Kate que, furiosa, embarca no primeiro vôo para buscá-lo. Ela se senta ao lado do malandro francês Luc Teyssier (Kevin Kline). Ele esconde um colar roubado e vinho entre as bagagens de Kate para passar pela alfândega. A bagagem dela é roubada, o colar é perdido e Kate e Luc se dirigem a Cannes para recuperar o colar e também Charlie. Ao longo dessa jornada, Kate e Luc começam a ter um pelo outro sentimentos que poderão mudar o rumo de suas vidas.
