Raj Malhotra, sua esposa Pooja sempre deram a seus cinco filhos muito amor. Quando Raj, que gastara todas as suas economias, resolve se aposentar e morar com um dos filhos. Porém, nenhum dos quatro filhos biológicos aceita cuidar dos dois e acabam por separar o casal, fazendo com que cada um fique em uma casa. A história mostra como os pais lidam com a separação e com o duro tratamento que recebem na casa dos filhos. Raj e Pooja encontram apoio apenas de seu filho adotivo, Alok, e de sua nora Arpita, que os acolhem. Triste com o tratamento que recebeu de seus filhos, Raj escreve um livro, Baghban, que faz enorme sucesso.
