Filme de aventura sino-indiano baseado na jornada de 17 anos de Xuanzang para a Índia durante a dinastia Tang no século 7. Xuan Zang (dc. 602 - 664), foi um monge Budista Chinês, estudioso, viajante, e tradutor que descreveu a interação entre a China e a Índia no começo da dinastia Tang. Desde jovem ele começou a ler livros religiosos, incluíndo os clássicos chineses e as escritas das eras antigas. Depois ele viajou pela China em busca dos livros sagrados do Budismo. Depois desenvolveu o desejo de visitar a Índia, nessa ocasião ele ficou famoso por sua jornada de 17 anos até a Índia. Jornada escrita em detalhes no clássico texto chines "The Great Tang Dynasty Record of the Western Regions".
