Na Filadélfia, no dia 26 de agosto de 1933, um garoto sonha em ir na estréia de um novo cinema, mas para isto precisa arrumar 25 centavos. Ele tem três opções: trabalhar para conseguir o dinheiro é uma tarefa difícil, pois na sua comunidade todos foram atingidos pela Depressão e muitos não tem o que comer; a sua segunda opção é esperar que o avô morra e lhe deixe esta quantia como herança; existe ainda a possibilidade de convencer o avô a lhe dar o dinheiro ainda vivo. Mas, independente do meio, ele está decidido a conseguir seu intento.
