Robin Hood é ferido numa luta contra os capangas do ganancioso fazendeiro João Climério. Este pretende tomar as terras do meio-irmão Ricardo, em viagem pela África, e evitar que a sobrinha Catarina entre na posse dos bens do pai. O grupo de robinianos escolhe Zé Grilo para passar por Robin enquanto este se recupera. Protegido por um velho índio, Grilo põe João em situações ridículas e atrapalha seus planos de casar Catarina com Nepomuceno. Robin Hood retorna, salvando a mocinha e casando com ela. Concluído o trabalho, Zé Grilo retorna a sua querida floresta.
