Lester March (Jerry Lewis) é um órfão de 25 anos que ganha a vida consertando aparelhos eletrônicos. Sua verdadeira paixão são as histórias de detetive e seu sonho é um dia se tornar um. Ele e seu melhor amigo, Pete Flint (Jesse White), ficam sabendo do caso de uma família que está procurando seu sobrinho desaparecido e como recompensa estão oferecendo Us$ 100.000,00. Na tentativa de conseguir o dinheiro e de viver uma aventura de detetive, Lester invade a casa da família em busca de provas e pistas.
