O dia é 30 de janeiro de 1972. Na cidade de Derry, na Irlanda do Norte, os cidadãos saem em passeata pelos direitos humanos. Sem motivo aparente, soldados britânicos atiram e matam 13 pessoas desarmadas e, a princípio, sem qualquer conexão com o IRA, o grupo que luta pela libertação da Irlanda do Norte. Esse episódio é conhecido como Domingo Sangrento e marca o começo do conflito que transformou-se em guerra civil, com muitos atos de violência e terrorismo. O filme acompanha, em estilo seco e realista, a vida de quatro homens envolvidos em ambos os lados do conflito.
