Por obra do destino, André e Maria Luisa se encontram num navio. Ao desembarcarem, André oferece repouso para a moça, que mesmo com as insistências do rapaz nega o convite. Despedem-se, mas o rapaz - esperançoso - deixa seu telefone. Chegando em casa, André reencontra seus parentes com problemas mentais, que ali residem e tenta convencê-los da não internação. Além do coração bondoso do rapaz, no testamento de seu pai estava explícito que a herança só seria herdada se eles ali permanecessem. Em seguida, Maria Luisa, por não conseguir vaga nos hotéis do Rio, telefona ao rapaz pedindo guarida.
