Nesta comédia dramática, um adolescente descobre os mistérios do sexo e do amor. Sam (Bug Hall) é filho de Lydia Callahan (Jennifer Jason Leigh) e tem 14 anos, mesma idade que sua mãe tinha quando tornou-se mãe. A família mora em uma pequena cidade norte-americana e Sam, com dificuldades de se adaptar à vida escolar, faz amizade com Dothan Talbot (Brad Renfro). E é na mesma escola que uma colega propõe a Sam uma experiência inusitada: não querendo parecer inexperiente sexualmente, ela pede ajuda ao garoto. Sam quer ajudá-la, mas a possibilidade acaba atrapalhando seus planos com sua Garota dos Sonhos imaginária (Drew Barrymore).
