Claude Dallas é um homem que gosta de ser livre, então ele vive nas montanhas onde caça por seu alimento. No entanto, Bill Pogue é um guarda florestal que abomina qualquer um que caça fora de época. Quando ele pega Claude Dallas fazendo isso, ele está prestes a prendê-lo quando Claude o mata e também o outro guarda que estava com ele. Quando o homem que estava com Dallas diz à polícia o que aconteceu, uma caçada nacional segue. E há pessoas que não gostam de Pogue e esperam que Dallas nunca seja pego, tornando-se assim um herói popular. Baseado em fatos reais.
