Clássico de Alexandre Dumas sobre os irmãos gêmeos (um bom e o outro mau) herdeiros do trono francês: O homem prisioneiro sob uma máscara de ferro e seu afetado e elegante irmão gêmeo, o Rei Louis XIV. O homem fechado sob a máscara é Phillipe, considerado morto, irmão gêmeo do Rei, considerado herdeiro por direito ao trono, era mantido na obscuridade por motivos políticos. Seu destino é assumir o trono no lugar do irmão, Louis, que é manipulado por Fouquet. O capitão dos mosqueteiros, D´Artagnam, e Colbert, ministro do Rei para assuntos domésticos, planejam restaurar a desejada autonomia e prosperidade do reino ao substituir Phillipe pelo Rei. O plano tem sucesso e Phillipe assume o trono enquanto seu irmão é condenado na máscara de ferro.
