Mas quando um desonesto xerife e seus homens matam o inglês porque ele planeja abastecer o forte do exército com sua carne, Billy decide vingar essa morte matando os quatro homens responsáveis mas acaba envolvendo nesse tumulto a vida de todos ao seu redor - Tom e Charlie, dois parceiros com as quais ele trabalhou; Pat Garret, que está prestes a se casar; E o gentil casal mexicano que o abriga quando está com problemas.
