Uma notícia chega à cavalaria americana de que o líder apache Ulzana deixou sua reserva acompanhado de um grupo de índios. A um jovem oficial, Tenente DeBuin, é designada uma pequena companhia com a missão de encontrar Ulzana e trazê-lo de volta; acompanhando a tropa está McIntosh, um experiente batedor, e Ke-Ni-Tay, um guia apache. Ulzana massacra, estupra e saqueia através dos campos; e conforme DeBuin encontra os vestígios de sua passagem por meio de suas vítimas, ele é forçado a aprender com McIntosh e enfrentar sua própria ingenuidade e seus preconceitos intrínsecos.
