O promotor Mark Brady condena Robert Graham à prisão por assassinato. Em seguida, ele se torna o diretor do presídio onde Robert cumpre pena. Apesar de repelir a amizade de Mark (que acredita ser ele um bom sujeito, apesar de tudo...), Robert aceita ser seu motorista e apaixona-se por Mary, a filha de Mark, que corresponde. Certo dia, na prisão, o assassino Ned mata Runch, um delator. Robert, que testemunhou tudo, recusa-se a entregar Ned e Mark envia-o para a solitária. Mas Robert é durão e a situação fica nesse impasse até que Ned confessa.
