Ryevsk, Rússia, 1870. As tensões abundam na família Karamazov. Fyodor é um libertino rico que segura bem os cordões da bolsa. Seus quatro filhos crescidos incluem Dmitri, o mais velho, um oficial elegante, sempre falido e em desacordo com o pai, noivo de Katya, ela mesma adorável e rica. Os outros irmãos incluem um esteta estéril, um biscateiro que é um bastardo, e um monge. As tensões familiares explodem quando Dmitri se apaixona por uma das amantes de seu pai, a coquete Grushenka. Dois irmãos veem o ciúme de Dmitri por seu pai como uma oportunidade de herdar mais cedo. Atos de violência levam à conclusão da história: provas de honra, consciência, perdão e redenção.
