Diego Mariano é o zelador da terra que cerca um santuário; ele é o pai de Maya, de 14 anos. Diego quer que sua filha seja autossuficiente, então ele a ensina a disparar uma arma. Depois de falhar suas primeiras aulas de tiro, Maya vaga para o santuário da floresta com a espingarda de cano duplo de seu pai e deliberadamente mata uma águia filipina, um animal em extinção. Enquanto isso, o policial Domingo vai para a área para investigar o misterioso desaparecimento de agricultores a caminho de Manila em um ônibus, mas é obrigado a parar. O parceiro de Domingo, Mendoza, e seu comandante, acreditam que Domingo deveria se concentrar em encontrar o assassino da águia filipina.
