Após a queda de Tobruk em junho de 1942, o sargento do Exército dos EUA Joe Gunn conduz seu tanque para o deserto do Saara, a fim de evitar o avanço das forças de Rommel e alcançar as linhas aliadas. Ao longo do caminho ele encontra alguns soldados aliados, mas logo eles ficam sem água. Eles encontram água no antigo poço, mas o poço é o objetivo de todo um batalhão alemão. Apesar das probabilidades impossíveis, o Sargento Gunn decide defender o poço.
