O Príncipe Basil Basilovich não pode se casar com Angèle Didier, uma cantora de ópera que ele ama, porque ela não tem um título. Então ele paga ao falido Conde René de Luxemburg uma quantia em dinheiro para que ele se case com Angèle, e para se divorciar ela em seis meses. Assim ela passaria a ter um título, e o Príncipe Basil poderia então casar com ela. Na cerimônia de casamento o noivo René a a noiva Angèle são separados por uma tela e não se conhecem. Após a cerimônia René viaja. Seis meses depois, René e Angèle se encontram e iniciam um romance, sem saber que já são casados. Mas o Príncipe Basil quer que o Conde honre seu compromisso e se divorcie de Angèle. Só que então entra em cena a tia de Renè, e que já fora o amor do Príncipe Basil no passado. As coisas então caminham para um final feliz para todos.
