Molly McKay (Elisabeth Shue) é uma mulher de 28 anos queé intelectualmente "lenta", pois sofre de autismo desde a infância. Ainda muito jovem foi internada, mas agora, com o fechamento da instituição, Buck McKay (Aaron Eckhart), seu irmão, fica com sua guarda. Buck não a via desde quando ela era criança, assim apesar de irmãos eram dois estranhos. Além disto Buck está atravessando problemas em sua vida profissional. Quando Buck fica sabendo através dos médicos de uma arriscada cirurgia experimental que pode curar Molly, ele dá seu consentimento. A operação é um sucesso e Molly deixa de sofrer de autismo, sendo que paralelamente revela um genial intelecto. Mas a intensa concentração da sua personalidade autista permanece e Buck constata que a nova Molly vai enfrentar outro grande desafio.
