Wilson, ex-figurante de cinema, acerta na loteria e se torna produtor cinematográfico. Para escrever o argumento de seu primeiro filme, contrata dois tipos antagônicos: Humberto, intelectual sofisticado, casado e austro e o expansivo Carlos, apologista dos temas eróticos. No afã de sintonizar seu estilo com o de Carlos, Humberto entrega-se tão a fundo à pesquisa de tipos humanos que acaba provocando suspeitas em sua mulher, Marlene, ocasionando o rompimento do casal, Wilson é obrigado a internar Humberto num hospício e Marlene, sozinha, fica à mercê das investidas de um vizinho.
