No início do século XX, o Mister First apresentou o cinema aos habitantes de uma pequena cidade no oeste americano. Aqui a vida é barata e o único entretenimento disponível é bebida, libertinagem e brigas. First acredita sinceramente que o cinema é capaz de transformar a vida dessas pessoas e, de fato, as sessões de cinema começam a fazer milagres. Impressionados pelos filmes dos irmãos Lumière e de Chaplin, bandidos e bêbados aprendem a se comportar com cortesia, a tratar índios e mulheres como iguais. É entre seus espectadores que First encontra seu amor, a Srta. Diane Little. O romance dura pouco. Primeira parte para comprar presentes de casamento. Ao retornar, ele descobre que um certo Senhor Segundo tomou seu lugar e está exibindo filmes cheios de violência gratuita.
