Contra muitas probabilidades, “The Threepenny Opera”, de Bertolt Brecht, se torna um sucesso fenomenal. A indústria cinematográfica capta o perfume e busca fazer com que o mestre dirija uma versão cinematográfica de sua “peça com música”. No entanto, Brecht se recusa a seguir suas regras. Enquanto o estúdio quer censurar a “sujeira” e usar os cordões do coração para lucrar com o sucesso, o autor quer fazer nada menos do que um tipo de filme completamente novo. Uma crítica socialista ao capitalismo, encenada como um conflito entre Mack the Knife, um gangster londrino, e Peachum, o chefe da máfia dos mendigos.
