Na Louisianna dos anos trinta, na casa mal assombrada Whateley, Lavina mãe solteira, dá a luz um menino e a um monstro. Dez anos depois, o Dr. Henry Armitage e sua assistente, a doutora Fay Morgan, enfrentam uma entidade do mal que está no corpo de uma jovem. Ao tentar exorcizar o demônio eles descobrem algo espantoso, uma pirâmide de ritual Sumério de 3.000 anos. Eles convidam o arrogante e cético professor Walter Rice para observar a pirâmide e ajudá-los a encontrar e traduzir o Necronomicon. Mas em todas as cópias existentes do Necromicon a página 751 está faltando. Enquanto isso, o filho de Lavina Wilbur Whateley, prestes há completar 10 anos, mas com a aparência de um homem de 40 anos, procura a página que falta para poder enfim abrir um portal.
