Charlie McCready é um pai preocupado. Sua filha, Wendy, irá para a universidade no outono, e ele sente que seu grupo de amigos não possui ambições, especialmente seu namorado, Bart. Ele sabe que os amigos de Wendy irão para a mesma universidade, então elabora um plano onde ela receberá uma bolsa de estudos para uma universidade diferente, o mesmo em que sua madrasta estudou. Tudo vai como o planejado, até Wendy descobrir o plano de Charlie e se rebelar, passando a namorar um artista hippie.
