Entre 1954 e 1962, centenas de jovens franceses se recusaram a participar da guerra contra a Argélia. Esses negativos eram pacifistas ou anticolonialistas e alguns se refugiaram na Suíça, onde os cidadãos os ajudaram, ao contrário da França, onde eram considerados traidores. Alguns meses depois que a Argélia ganhou sua independência, Villi Hermann foi a uma região devastada pela guerra, perto da fronteira argelino-marroquina, para ajudar a reconstruir uma escola. Recentemente, ele voltou lá e conheceu seus alunos anteriores, bem como alguns recusados franceses.
