No início do século XX, o poeta americano T. S. Eliot se apaixona pela aristocrática inglesa Vivienne Highwood. Como não tem dinheiro, o casal decide fugir para, assim, poder se casar. Após o casamento instalam-se no sótão da casa de Bertrand Russell. Para sobreviver, Eliot aceita trabalhar em um banco. A turbulência começa quando a esposa do poeta mostra uma personalidade desequilibrada que se manifesta através de constantes mudanças de humor.
