Aos 53 anos Maria Callas (Fanny Ardant) vive reclusa em seu apartamento, em nada lembrando a grande cantora que encantou público e crítica no passado. Após grande insistência, seu amigo Larry Kelly (Jeremy Irons) consegue vê-la. Achando-a muito abatida, Larry faz a Callas um convite inusitado: que seja a estrela de um especial para a TV, interpretando uma de suas famosas peças. Por causa do desgaste de sua voz atual Larry quer que Callas seja dublada no especial, o que faz com a cantora revisite sua carreira em busca do trabalho ideal para seu retorno.
