Os veranistas do hotel do Barreiro, em Araxá, acompanham até o avião o féretro do magnata Medeiros de Alcântara. Depois retornam ao hotel... No início da estação hidroterápica chegam Eduardo e Lúcia Feitosa, rico casal paulista, o banqueiro Belmiro e sua mulher, três amigas solteironas, Fátima, Teresa e Belinha, o Gen. Solon de Fuentes, ex-presidente deposto de um país sul-americano, o escritor Fernando Cavalcanti, o banqueiro Medeiros de Alcântara e sua mulher. Nos salões e no parque do hotel, a vida convencional se impõe, mas é nos aposentos que os personagens revelam suas disposições sexuais e políticas.
