O destruidor de burros Dingus Magee está procurando um trem de ouro quando encontra o velho conhecido Hoke Birdsill no palco para São Francisco e rouba seu dinheiro. Hoke vai para a cidade vizinha de Yerkey's Hole, onde Belle Knops é prefeita e amante do bordel. Ela nomeia o xerife de Hoke Town e tenta fazer com que ele incite os índios para que os soldados do forte próximo (os principais clientes) não vão para Little Big Horn. Dingus tenta criar mais problemas e se envolver com a índia pálida e falante de bebê, Anna. O filme é uma manifestação da frase frequentemente repetida “o Código do Ocidente” e exagera-a e ao que ela representa no ridículo que é.
