Na virada do século 19, a família Ratowitz emigra da Rússia para os Estados Unidos em busca de uma vida melhor. Não há gatos na América e as ruas são pavimentadas com queijo, acreditam eles. Chegando em Nova York, o pequeno ratinho Fievel fica maravilhado com a cidade e se perde dos pais. Começa uma incrível saga de encontros, desencontros, novas amizades e velhas ameaças através das perigosas ruas.
