Escrito por Carmen Santos e Humberto Mauro, baseados em história de Henrique Pongetti. Trata-se de uma versão heróica dos acontecimentos que, na Vila Rica do século XVIII, levaram o alferes Joaquim José da Silva Xavier à morte na forca pela participação no movimento que ficou conhecido como a Inconfidência (ou Conjuração) Mineira. Esse filme era o grande projeto da cineasta Carmen Santos, que já o iniciara em 1937. Apesar de ter começado a filmar em 1941, só conseguiu terminar as gravações e a edição em 1948. De tão envolvida, Carmen atuou, dirigiu e escreveu — um trabalho de 11 anos que redundou em fracasso de bilheteria e levou à falência de sua produtora, que foi vendida na década seguinte
