Exímio contador de histórias, ator, roteirista e cineasta, Hugo Carvana (1937-2014) é o narrador de sua própria história neste retrato fílmico. Sua voz inconfundível pontua mais de 60 anos de carreira, em entrevistas colhidas desde os anos 1970 aos últimos meses de vida, em 2014. O jovem estudante de teatro, o figurante nas chanchadas, o ator emblemático do Cinema Novo, o comediante irreverente, o diretor de clássicos populares como “Vai Trabalhar, Vagabundo” e “Se Segura, Malandro!” revelam-se em trechos de filmes que abarcam de Lulu de Barros a Glauber Rocha, de Ruy Guerra e Júlio Bressane ao próprio Carvana. Cenas inéditas de “making of” de suas produções documentam o ofício do diretor na sua rotina de trabalho.
