Ed Motta despontou em fins dos anos 80, como o vigoroso cantor e um dos compositores e produtores do Conexão Japeri. Uma sensação instantânea no circuito carioca de shows, que o grupo confirmou em seu disco de estréia, "Conexão Japeri" (Warner), em 1988, com canções como "Manuel", "Vamos dançar", "Baixo Rio" e "Um love". Sucessos marcados por exuberante musicalidade e que introduziam fortes componentes do soul e do funk ao pop-rock que então vigorava no Brasil.
