Zatoichi chega à cidade de Tonda, invadida por gângsteres. Usando uma de suas técnicas favoritas, Zatoichi consegue ganhar 8 ryo em um jogo de azar fraudado. Naturalmente, os gângsteres locais tentam matá-lo, e a aventura começa. Acontece que um ferreiro chamado Senzo examina a espada de cana de Zatoichi e descobre que ela foi forjada por seu antigo mentor. Senzo descobre que a espada está no fim de sua utilidade e se quebrará quando for usada novamente.
