Zatoichi é convidado por acaso para uma cerimônia que reúne todos os clãs da Yakuza da região, sob a égide de seu líder supremo, um padrinho cruel e demoníaco, cego como ele. Inicialmente recebido como um deles, o “Chefão Zatoichi”, porta-voz de valores morais altamente pessoais, logo se torna um convidado incômodo. Temendo que ele possa interferir na cerimônia de eleição de seu sucessor, o rei do submundo, também conhecido como “Xogun das sombras”, decide eliminar Zatoichi. Para isso, ele usa a única arma que acredita ser capaz de derrubar o inigualável espadachim: a sedução. E, de fato, Zatoichi se apaixona perdidamente pela mulher encarregada de matá-lo.
