Em 1996 o diretor André Luiz Oliveira iniciou a pré produção do longa Viva o Povo Brasileiro, uma adaptação da obra homônima de João Ubaldo Ribeiro. No entanto, devido a uma série de acontecimentos dramáticos, o processo precisou ser interrompido em 2005, quase dez anos depois de sua idealização inicial. Os bastidores e algumas cenas do filme inacabado receberam um novo tratamento, assumindo uma linguagem documental e evidenciando, dessa forma, as relações mais profundas entre o criador, André, e a criatura, o filme.
