Uma afetuosa mãe, Natalie Swerdlow (Diane Keaton), sempre deu total atenção para sua filha Sara (Alexa Davalos). Mesmo depois dela se tornar adulta ainda usam a mesma saudação: "Renda-se, Dorothy", por causa de "O Mágico de Oz", já que quando criança Sara adorava ouvir esta história. Repentinamente Natalie vê que tudo aquilo acabou, pois enquanto Sara estava com alguns amigos, passando férias em Hamptons, Long Island, morre em um acidente de automóvel. Após o choque inicial e o funeral, Natalie vai para a casa onde a filha passava férias, pois quer saber mais sobre seus últimos dias. Assim se muda para o quarto dela na casa em Long Island e começa a conhecer seus amigos. Em sua dor começa limpando a casa como se fosse uma faxineira perfeccionista, pois estava uma bagunça.
