Quando o Rei e a rainha são envenenados, os irmãos Per e Pål são presos, suspeitos de estar por trás disso. O irmão mais novo Espen "Ash Lad" e a princesa Kristin partem em uma busca para encontrar o mítico Castelo Dourado, que se diz ser construído em ouro puro. Em Soria Moria, fica um poço contendo a Água da Vida, a única coisa que pode curar os pais de Kristin. Mas alguns dinamarqueses perversos também estão em busca do Castelo Dourado. Se Espen e Kristin falharem, isso significará o fim dos irmãos, do reino e talvez do mundo inteiro.
