Alberto Nardi é um empresário romano que se imagina um homem de grande capacidade, mas cuja fábrica está perenemente à beira da catástrofe. Alberto é casado com uma rica e bem sucedida mulher de negócios de Milão, Elvira Almiraghi que tem uma atitude no-nonsense e mal consegue tolerar as tentativas de seu marido para manter sua fábrica à tona com seu dinheiro. Alberto tenta "manter-se" com sua esposa e seus amigos ricos e bem-sucedidos, mas ele só consegue ridicularizar a si mesmo. Divertindo-se com suas travessuras Elvira trata publicamente seu marido como um palhaço bobo, confiante de que ele nunca vai deixá-la na esperança de lucrar com sua fortuna.
