O coronel Amaro Silva, criador de gado, é proprietário de uma vasta fazenda no interior da cidade gaúcha de Dom Pedrito. Seu filho Aparício é o capataz da fazenda, tendo como seu auxiliar o negrinho Tonico, afilhado do coronel. Certo dia, surge ali um novo vizinho: Dr. Azevedo, que acaba de comprar vastas terras. Com ele vem sua filha Aurora. Um dia, ela e Aparício encontram-se nas terras deste e iniciam um romance. Mas quando o gado da fazenda do Dr. Azevedo é roubado, Aparício é acusado pelo crime em virtude das pistas falsas deixadas pelos ladrões, e precisará provar sua inocência.
