Francis sobreviveu à sua fuga da África Ocidental. Quando ele acorda em uma praia no sul da Europa, ele está determinado a viver uma vida normal e decente de agora em diante. Mas ele acaba na Berlim atual, onde um apátrida sem permissão de trabalho é tratado tão impiedosamente. O imigrante inicialmente resiste a uma oferta de traficar drogas, mas depois fica sob a influência de Reinhold, seu amigo neurótico e viciado em sexo que o acolhe. Quando Francis conhece Eva, a dona do clube, e a prostituta Mieze, ele sente que encontrou algo que faz sentido pela primeira vez, algo que ele nunca conheceu antes: um pouco de felicidade - que é exatamente o que Reinhold o inveja e fará tudo para destruir.
